The Brisbane River Plan 1823
The Brisbane River Plan 1823

“The Brisbane River Plan” is the first in a Series of Brisbane paintings, a theme which I still explore today.  Inspired by an iconic photo looking down Queen Street in 1859 (the year Queensland became a State); and the 1823 survey map by Stirling & John Oxley of Mairwar, renamed the Brisbane River.  However, beneath what we can see, are the plans, maps and dreams of those who have gone before us … those who lived and loved and built the Brisbane, we are blessed with today.

This painting reflects my love of the Queenslander home, historic maps, the forever blue sky, the patterns - layers of hills and triangles of red and silver roofs; the colour blue…and Mairwar, our River.     2006 (c)
